2025 BYU Mapathon

The BYU Mapathon is back!

This fun service project on the second floor of the BYU Library equips volunteers to use geographic information systems (GIS) to map buildings and streets in remote areas around the world. These maps can then help humanitarian organizations better respond to and mitigate natural disasters, disease outbreaks, and other threats.

When and where

  • November 19, 2025 (World GIS Day)
  • 3pm to 6pm
  • 2742 HBLL (by the music study area)

How to participate

  • RSVP
  • Create an account with the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team before you arrive (click "Sign Up"). This helps us measure the number of elements mapped by all volunteers.
  • Bring your laptop and check in upon arrival. Then join a short training session. You'll be taught how to map in as little as 10 minutes.
  • Map, eat pizza and snacks, win prizes, make friends, and watch BYU's impact in real time on a big screen!

Thanks to the BYU Library Geospatial Services & Training Lab, the Geography department, the Ballard Center, the Sustainability Office, BYU Red Cross, and all volunteers!
